Ethical AI in Healthcare & Life Sciences
Ethical AI in healthcare and life sciences ran from 2024 to 2026 with a focus on (a) AI-assisted decision-making in health care, especially diagnosis tools and triage tools in clinical settings, and (2) personalized drug development.
New AI tools are revolutionizing health care and life sciences. But according to recent reports many users and patients lack trust of the technology, having concerns over data privacy, potential biases, ascription of responsibility, and lack of transparency in AI decision-making processes. Therefore, it is essential to make sure that those AI-assisted decision-making processes in clinical and life science contexts are ethically responsible and trustworthy. An ethical framework is needed that can inform the academic discussions but also guide practitioners in healthcare and life sciences with AI development.
Moreover, these developments do not happen only locally but must be situated in a global context, in which, next to ethical issues at the level of practices and organizations, also global ethical and political challenges play a role, such as issues concerning digital inclusion and global justice.
This project analyzes the ethical issues raised in AI assisted decision-making in clinical (e.g. diagnosis tools and triage tools) and life sciences (personalized drug development) in local and global contexts and elaborates an ethical framework that can guide practitioners in healthcare and AI development.
