- Abstract
One way of showing that and how AI is political is by using the concept of power. Applying political and social theory of power to AI, this chapter analyzes how AI relates to power. After using Sattarov's general conceptual framework about power and technology to outline some of the main ways in which AI may impact power, I draw on three theories of power in order to elaborate on some specific relations between AI and power. Using Marxism and critical theory, Foucault and Butler, and a performance-oriented approach drawn from my own work, I show that and how power is exercised through AI. I conclude that there is a sense in which artificial intelligence is also always “artificial power” but note that this is only possible through human technoperformances, which shape what we do and are.
