Céline Pieters

Postdoc

Céline Pieters is a Postdoctoral researcher in Rhetoric at the University of Vienna. She is currently involved in a project about Responsible entrepreneurship in AI and synthetic biology, within the research group of Philosophy of Media and Technology.

Her areas of interest include linguistics, rhetoric, creative writing, epistemology and ethics of technology. Especially, she focuses on the practical dimension of rhetoric and the roles of imagination in ethics.

Previously, she carried out her doctoral research in the department of robotics of the LAAS-CNRS Toulouse, within the team GEPETTO specialized in the movement of anthropomorphic systems. She received the Ph.D. degree in Rhetoric and in Robotics from the Université libre de Bruxelles, Belgium and the Institut National des Sciences Appliquées de Toulouse, France. Her thesis “The words of robotics: a rhetorical approach” questioned the role of natural language on our representations of robots. This work was followed by the book Wording Robotics (Springer, 2019) within the context of the 4th Anthropomorphic Motion Factory at the LAAS-CNRS Toulouse (2017).

Céline is also involved in several projects as a writer and board game designer. She is interested in exploring the bond between art and science through narration.
